Henckels knife sets are everywhere, from department stores to warehouse clubs, and they’re often very affordable. But the brand has many lines, and quality varies a lot between them.
This review explains how Henckels relates to Zwilling, compares the main lines and recommends the sets that give the best value.
Henckels vs Zwilling: What’s the Difference?

The Zwilling group was founded in Solingen, Germany, in 1731, as the Wikipedia entry on the Zwilling group explains. Today it sells premium knives under the Zwilling name and more affordable knives under the Henckels name, previously called Henckels International.
Zwilling’s main German lines are made in Solingen and ice-hardened with its FRIODUR process, according to Zwilling’s forged knives page. Henckels lines are made in Spain, China or India and cost much less.
Our older review mixed up the two brands, describing Zwilling sets as Henckels and claiming all were made in Germany. We’ve separated them clearly here.
Henckels Lines Compared

| Line | Construction | Made in | Hardness (HRC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | Forged | Spain | 55–58 |
| Forged Accent | Forged | China | 56–58 |
| Forged Premio | Forged | China | 55 |
| Modernist | Forged | China | 53–55 |
| Statement | Stamped | China | 54–56 |
| Definition | Stamped | China | 54–56 |
| Solution | Stamped | India | 50–54 |
These figures come from kitchen review site The Rational Kitchen’s Henckels knives review, which tested many Henckels lines. All use X50CrMoV15 German stainless steel; the differences come from heat treatment, construction and handles.
How we chose: we haven’t lab-tested these knives side by side. We compared blade length and shape, steel, construction (forged or stamped), handle design and the makers’ published specifications, and we favored models with a long track record and consistent owner feedback over newer, unproven listings.
The Best Henckels Knife Sets
1. Henckels Classic — Best Forged Henckels
Best for: cooks who want a traditional German-style forged set at a value price.
Henckels Classic knives are forged in Spain, with a full bolster, full tang and triple-riveted handle. At 55–58 HRC, they’re among the hardest Henckels knives.
They look and feel much like more expensive German knives. The Rational Kitchen named Classic its best forged Henckels line for hardness and handle durability.
Sets come in several sizes, so choose one with the knives you’ll actually use.
What we like:
- Forged, full bolster
- Hardest Henckels line
- Traditional German feel
What to consider:
- Heavier than stamped lines
- Full bolster can complicate sharpening the heel

2. Henckels Statement — Best Stamped Set
Best for: budget buyers who want a complete, lightweight set.
Statement knives are stamped from a single piece of steel with a triple-riveted handle, making them light and inexpensive. At 54–56 HRC, they’re among the hardest stamped Henckels lines.
The 14-piece set covers a chef’s knife, bread knife, paring knife, steak knives and more in a wooden block. It’s a practical starter set for a new kitchen.
For a closer look at a similar Statement set, see our Henckels Statement set review.
What we like:
- Very affordable
- Light and easy to use
- Complete set with steak knives
What to consider:
- No bolster
- Stamped blades feel light for heavy chopping

3. Henckels Modernist — Best Modern Design
Best for: cooks who want a sleek, one-piece stainless look.
Modernist knives are forged with a seamless stainless steel handle and blade. The Rational Kitchen’s testers liked their balance and modern styling, making it their favorite overall line.
The all-steel handles are easy to clean and look striking on a countertop.
At 53–55 HRC, the steel is softer than Classic, so it needs honing more often.
What we like:
- Sleek one-piece design
- Good balance
- Easy-to-clean handles
What to consider:
- Steel handles can feel slippery
- Softer steel

4. Henckels Forged Accent — Best Colorful Forged Set
Best for: cooks who want forged knives with a splash of color.
Forged Accent knives have forged blades rated at 56–58 HRC and colorful handles. Some sets come with self-sharpening blocks.
They’re harder than many Henckels lines and offer good value for forged construction.
The Rational Kitchen generally doesn’t recommend self-sharpening blocks, so consider a standard block and a honing steel instead.
What we like:
- Forged, relatively hard steel
- Fun handle colors
- Good value
What to consider:
- Self-sharpening blocks have trade-offs
- Made in China, if origin matters to you

5. Henckels Definition — Best Value Stamped Line
Best for: anyone who wants harder stamped knives at a low price.
Definition is a stamped line rated at 54–56 HRC, matching Statement as the hardest stamped Henckels knives. The Rational Kitchen recommends it alongside Statement.
It suits busy kitchens where light, easy-to-sharpen knives are an advantage.
As with any stamped knife, it won’t feel as solid as a forged blade.
What we like:
- Hard for a stamped line
- Light and nimble
- Affordable
What to consider:
- Lighter feel
- Basic styling

6. Henckels Statement Bread Knife — Best Add-On
Best for: anyone filling a gap in their knife collection on a budget.
If you already have a chef’s knife, a good serrated bread knife is the next most useful purchase. The Statement 8-inch bread knife is light and inexpensive.
Serrated knives stay usable for a long time, so even softer steel works well here.
Pair it with the Statement 3-inch paring knife for a low-cost trio.
What we like:
- Very affordable
- Useful serrated edge
- Light
What to consider:
- Basic handle
- Short for very large loaves

7. Zwilling Twin Signature 3-Piece — Best Step Up
Best for: buyers who want the Zwilling name and FRIODUR-hardened steel at a modest price.
Twin Signature is a Zwilling-branded stamped line, ice-hardened like the brand’s other knives. This small set covers the essentials without paying for a big block.
It’s a good middle ground between budget Henckels sets and premium forged Zwilling knives.
For Zwilling’s full range, read our Zwilling knife comparison chart.
What we like:
- Zwilling quality at a lower price
- Essential knives only
- Light and easy to sharpen
What to consider:
- Stamped, no bolster
- Small set

Lines to Avoid
The Rational Kitchen found the Solution line dull out of the box and too soft at 50–54 HRC, and recommends avoiding most lines below about 54 HRC. It also advises against the micro-serrated Everedge lines, which can’t be resharpened properly.
Our older review also described the Twin Signature starter set as a “cheddar knife set”. It’s actually Zwilling’s 3-piece kitchen knife set, not a cheese set.
How to Choose a Henckels Set
Forged or Stamped?
Forged lines like Classic and Forged Accent feel heavier and more solid. Stamped lines like Statement and Definition are lighter, cheaper and easier to sharpen to the heel.
See our forged vs stamped knives guide for the trade-offs.
How Many Pieces?
Large sets look like good value, but most cooks use just a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a bread knife daily. Choose a set with the knives you need, plus steak knives if you want them.
Hardness
Harder knives hold their edge longer. Among Henckels lines, Classic and Forged Accent are the hardest forged options, and Statement and Definition are the hardest stamped ones.
Block Type
Wooden blocks are classic and sturdy. Self-sharpening blocks are convenient but grind a little steel each time, so many testers prefer a standard block and a honing steel.
Caring for Henckels Knives
- Hand-wash with warm, soapy water and dry immediately.
- Skip the dishwasher, even if a listing says dishwasher-safe.
- Hone often with the steel included in most sets.
- Sharpen at about 15–20° per side when honing no longer helps.
- Store knives in the block with edges protected.
Henckels vs Other Brands
Compared with Wüsthof or Zwilling, Henckels sets cost much less but use softer steel and simpler finishing. Compared with Cangshan, Henckels offers simpler designs at lower prices; read our Cangshan vs Henckels comparison.
For German-made forged quality, step up to Zwilling Pro or Professional S, such as the Zwilling Pro S chef’s knife.
What’s in a Typical Henckels Set?
Most Henckels block sets include a chef’s knife, a santoku or utility knife, a paring knife, a bread knife, kitchen shears and a honing steel. Larger sets add steak knives, a boning knife or a carving knife.
Check the exact contents before buying, since two sets with the same piece count can include very different knives. Shears and the block itself count as pieces in most listings.
Steak Knives in Henckels Sets
Many Henckels sets include serrated or micro-serrated steak knives. Serrated steak knives stay usable for a long time, but micro-serrated edges can’t be resharpened properly.
If steak knives matter to you, choose a set with straight-edged or properly serrated steak knives, or buy them separately.
Sharpening Henckels Knives
Henckels knives use relatively soft steel, so they’re quick to sharpen on a medium whetstone or a pull-through sharpener. Keep to about 15–20° per side, and finish with a few strokes on the honing steel.
Regular honing makes the biggest difference. A few strokes before each use keep the edge aligned and delay the need for sharpening.
What Owners Say
Owners of the harder lines, such as Classic and Statement, generally praise their sharpness for the price and their comfortable handles. Complaints focus on softer lines dulling quickly and on rust spots when knives are left wet or washed in a dishwasher.
As with any budget knife, care makes a big difference to how long the edges last.
Is Henckels Worth It?
Yes, if you choose the right line. Classic, Forged Accent, Statement and Definition offer good value, while the softest lines are worth skipping.
For a kitchen on a budget, a Henckels Statement or Classic set covers everyday cooking well. For a lifetime investment, consider premium Zwilling or Wüsthof knives instead.
Who Should Buy Henckels?
Henckels suits new homeowners, students, rental properties and anyone who wants a complete matching set without a big outlay. It’s also a sensible choice for a second kitchen or holiday home.
Keen cooks who sharpen often may outgrow the softer lines and want harder steel or a premium forged knife.
Warranty
Henckels knives come with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. It doesn’t cover normal wear, chips from misuse or damage from dishwashers.
Buy from authorized retailers and keep your receipt so a claim is straightforward if something goes wrong.
Final Buying Tip
Before buying a big set, decide which three or four knives you’ll use most and check that they’re in the box. A smaller set of better knives usually beats a large block of cheap ones.
You can always add steak knives or specialty pieces later as your cooking needs grow.
